It turned out to be a silver Saturday for the Squamish Dragon Boat Association’s Team Chawanda in Steveston on Aug. 22.

Chawanda posted a strong showing at the Steveston Dragon Boat Festival on the Fraser River, earning a silver in the B division.

The team bested 18 other teams to take home the medal.

Cathie Greenlees of Team Chawanda said it marked as the debut for several paddlers, and they were happy to return home with a little hardware.

“This was the first race for at least four of our ladies,” she said.

“They worked hard as they raced one 250-metre sprint and three 500-metre heats. They were exhilarated and a bit tired at the end of the day but had a wonderful experience and were proud to bring home their first medal.”

It’s the second big win of the season for the team, as it captured gold at the Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival in July.

Greenlees gave kudos to head coach Macky Sumalileng and steersperson Rob Booth for all their help at the event in Steveston.

Next up for the team is its final race of the season in Penticton in early September.

Chawanda hits the waters of Lake Skaha for the Penticton Dragon Boat Festival on Sept. 12 to battle against dozens of other teams from all across the province.

The team will continue to paddle in the fall and invite all newcomers to try out the sport.
