After success in the spring, the Squamish Field Hockey Club is returning this fall with an added clinic for adult players on top of the club’s youth clinic.
The 10 adult clinic start Sept. 10 and go nearly every Sunday until Nov. 19 from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the all-weather turf field at Brennan Park Recreation Centre. The skipped date is Oct. 8.
Adults interested in all 10 sessions can pay $80 upfront or if just curious about trying out a session, you can pay $10 for a drop-in on any date.
Katherine Atkinson, one of the founders of the club, told The Squamish Chief that the idea for the adult clinic blossomed rather seamlessly from the youth clinic the club held in the spring, as more and more adults were talking about playing.
“There's a huge community of adults that would like to play,” Atkinson explained.
Atkinson said it’s a welcoming clinic, open to all genders and anyone over the age of 18. Right now, Atkinson said they have lots of interest from female players, so they are hoping to add more players of other genders.
And, experience in field hockey isn’t necessary.
“We'll have sticks for anyone who's new and wants to give it a shot,” Atkinson said.
Atkinson said they want to keep it “light and friendly” and “really social,” aiming for it to be an opportunity for adults in town to make new friends and have fun.
Similarly, the club is also soon starting its fall clinic for youth. It has 10 sessions scheduled on Saturdays from Sept. 9 until Nov. 18 from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the turf field. The skipped date is Oct. 7.
This opportunity is for five to 17-year-olds and costs $150 and comes with a team t-shirt.
Moreover, the fall clinic is going to prepare the group for a couple of scrimmages against the Whistler Field Hockey Club.
“Our clinic is focused on getting them comfortable and confident with the skills but also excited to play against another club and kind of get a taste of what that feels like,” said Atkinson.
Ultimately, this is another step towards getting the youth club ready to join a regional competitive league in the next couple of years.
