The Howe Sound Soccer League is looking to combine the various soccer leagues around Squamish and organize a not-for-profit society.

Recently, the Howe Sound Soccer League joined forces with the women’s league in town. The two combined leagues have about 600 registered players — up from about 100 players before the pandemic — between four women’s teams and eight men’s teams.

“We want to build the best possible soccer-playing experience for everyone in Squamish. We want to bring these leagues together, ultimately, and create what we call the cradle-to-grave soccer playing opportunities,” said Rowan Minnion, an interim board member for the league.

A part of that opportunity includes hopefully joining forces with the much larger Squamish Youth Soccer Association, which has approximately 1,000 registered players currently.

“They need to know who our new board is and it kind of needs to go from there,” said Minnion, who is also the manager for the Squamish Sounders FC. “But, I would love to see it happen in the next three years at the absolute most.”

As it stands, the Howe Sound Soccer League is currently seeking volunteers to take on various positions such as webmaster, financial manager and marketing officer to name a few. As well, they intend to establish a formal board and management structure, said Minnion, which would take place at its annual general meeting.

For this year, the league is running relatively normally from September to March, with a break during the winter holiday season. But Minnion said they’re still interested in new players, of any skill level, to join in weekly practice and scrimmage on Wednesdays from 8:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Brennan Park.

“It's for anybody who wants to just start playing soccer, it doesn't matter your fitness level or anything like that,” said Minnion.

The cost for Wednesday night drop-in play is $50 for the season which has 28 more weeks left to play. Minnion also added that some teams are still looking for more players as well.

“Our goal is to create the best possible soccer playing, coaching, managing and referee — basically all over soccer — experience for people of all ages in the Squamish area,” he said.
