STORMY making changes

Sports

The forecast is calling for increased fun on a new STORMY course. The annual long distance running event called the Squamish Test of Running Metal - Yeah!, or STORMY for short, is now being offered as a relay race.

The event started as a long distance trail run but new co-organizers Wendy Montgomery and Rich Rawling are building on the event established by Paul Cubbon to make it more accessible to a larger number of people.

The two new organizers are both past participants in the event. Rawling won the race in 2001 when the event made its debut. Montgomery was the top female in 2002 then again in 2003 and successfully defended her title again last year.

The new course features more trail and less road for the event scheduled to happen on Aug. 13. "The relay legs will range in distance from approximately 12 km to 29 km," Montgomery said.

Individual competitors will start at 6 a.m. and the teams will leave the start line at 7 a.m.

The fastest participants are expected to take well over five and a half hours to complete the race.

The event here is part of a new series called The Sea2Sky Trail Running Series and Squamish is hosting two of the events in the series.

The second event in Squamish is set for Sept. 11 and it will be called Loop the Lakes.

Registration for STORMY will open on April 15 and those interested can register online or through Canada Post. There's more STORMY information at www.stormytrailrace.ca.

Details of the trail running series can be found at www.s2srun.com.
