Swim club gets wet for a cause

Sports

The North Vancouver Chena swim team is holding a car wash fundraiser Sunday (Sept. 11) from 1 - 4 p.m. at the 7/11 on Garibaldi Way to send 13 high caliber swimmers to a training camp. Three of the swimmers are Squamish residents. Hana Vartanis, Claire Ourom and Olivia Montgomery have turned heads for their ability to train hard and learn fast. The girls are now on a break, but fundraising efforts are underway to help pay for the special training camp held in Hawaii in January.

Chena head coach Craig Potsep chose the girls for the two-week camp, which is meant to elevate the swimmers to their peak potential just in time for the Western competitions in February.

Grey Sox at Nationals

The Vancouver Grey Sox finished the preliminary round of the Canadian Fastball Championship tournament with a record of five and three then had a win and a loss in the finals.

The team, coached and managed by John Stuart of Squamish with Squamish infielder Kevin Schellenberg, were in St. Thomas, Ontario for the championship event.

The team played its last game of the tournament on Saturday (Sept. 3) against the Jarvis Merchants. The Grey Sox were shut out 3-0.

With the Grey Sox out of the hunt, the host team, the St. Thomas Evergreen Centennials, went on to claim the national title.
