It's been a good few months for former Squamish Minor Hockey Association product Josh Thrower.
The Squamish native was scooped up by the Western Hockey League's Calgary Hitmen in May and he also received word that he's been selected to participate in the first annual Allstate All-Canadians Mentorship Camp.
Thrower will be one of 42 players heading to the camp, which will be hosted by the National Hockey League Players Association. The invitation-only camp has been designed for today's generation of NHL players to give some of Canada's best young players the guidance and mentorship support they need in key foundational areas such as nutrition, strength and fitness, sports psychology, financial planning and personal values, organizers said.
The program aims to provide lessons, insight and mentorship from NHL players and hockey support experts to young hockey players across the country.
"These young players and their families will learn how to strategically prepare to play hockey," former NHLer Gary Roberts said in a statement. "We will emphasize how important it is to make a commitment to fitness, nutrition and mental development if they want to achieve longevity at an elite level.
"Today's game is played at such a high level that these young players need every edge they can find to be successful. We're going to show them how to get that edge early in their development."
The camp will take place Aug. 2 to 6 at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ont. and will conclude with an inter-squad exhibition game.
