Yacht club sails into summer

The Squamish Yacht Club has wrapped up the season, with Jalapeno finishing at the top of the heap.

"It was a great season, we had more boats than ever before - we had about 11 boats in our first week," said Squamish Yacht Club Fleet Captain, Trevor Chelswick.

"There is a constant rivalry between my boat, Jalapeno, and Alameda for first we actually bought their boat so they're hunting to beat us."

Another rivalry has pitted the boat Shenanigans against the Red Heather, Rumors, and Tesseract, which were all vying for third place. However, Raven came away with the bronze.

"It's competitive, but always fun," continued Chelswick.

"Now we're looking forward to the Squamish Open Annual Regatta which will be held in mid-August. It's part of the bigger Howe Sound Cup, and it's always a really good time."

New to the Squamish Yacht Club is the creation of a youth sailing school, the first of its kind in 15 years. Though getting the program off the ground was tricky, Chelswick said they eventually drummed up enough interest to make it work.

"It's the first time Squamish has ever had a youth program, or at least for ages, which is pretty cool," he said.

The sailing school will take place the last week of July, and will be taught by the B.C. Sailing Association.

Once the week long program has commenced, Chelswick hopes the Squamish Yacht Club should have the foundation to build its own program, if they find someone to run it.

"It won't be me, that's for sure," said Chelswick with a laugh.

"My wife and I just had a baby!"

The Squamish Yacht Club is offering weekly Wednesday social sails for club members and anyone interested in checking out the club.

"It's a simple sail and we're back for socials. It's an opportunity for new boats to come out, which makes it more open and inviting."
