Youth Triathlon returns after one-year hiatus

Sports

The Squamish Youth Triathlon is back. Over 150 kids aged six to 18 will get to show their athletic prowess in the swimming, running and biking competition held Sunday, May 15 at Brennan Park Recreation Centre. The main focus of the event is fun, participation and getting kids physically active.

To gear up for the event, organizers invited a Sport Development Officer for the International Triathlon Union to speak to Valleycliffe Elementary students. Kristine Chambers showed students from kindergarten to grade 7 what a triathlon is about by holding a mock triathlon in the school gym.

Chambers is involved in the federally funded Kids of Steel, a triathlon organization that trains kids to set goals, eat for energy, and learn equipment and mental skills.

"Kids need an outlet, they can be so confined," said Chambers. "This is about developing a long term lifestyle and it's fun and friendly."

Kids Triathlon participants have the option of doing the entire competition or partnering for a relay race. Registration in $25 and includes a T-shirt, goody bag, participation medal, snacks and drinks and a chance to win prizes. Entry forms, maps and course distances are available at squamishmountainbike.com/SqYouthTri. Participants must be registered by Wednesday (May 11).

This year's Squamish Youth Triathlon committee is looking for involvement from local businesses and organizations. Individuals interested in contributing can provide draw prizes, coupons, food and drink, financial donations or volunteer.
