Squamish’s MLA is now the official opposition critic for fisheries, aquaculture and BC Ferries.

Jordan Sturdy was recently given the role by interim BC Liberal leader Shirley Bond.

“My new portfolio covers many issues that really matter to people on the coast. Fisheries and aquaculture are important to our provincial economy, while coastal communities certainly depend on BC Ferries for everything from medical appointments to commuting to tourism,” said Sturdy in a news release on Monday.

“Members of our caucus are passionate about sustainable fisheries and we will continue to advocate for salmonids and other endangered species including our iconic B.C. steelhead.”

The role of opposition critics is to hold ministers accountable for their decisions. They are often the ones asking cabinet members tough questions during question period at the legislature.

Sturdy will likely be paying close attention to the work done by Lana Popham, who is the minister of agriculture, food and fisheries.
