Squamish officials will be handing out tickets to residents failing to secure attractants

A bear family, pictured here, has taken residence in the Garibaldi Highlands. Authorities are warning people to secure their attractants.

The District is cautioning residents to secure attractants, as a mother bear and three cubs are currently living near the Thunderbird Ridge area of Garibaldi Highlands.

Signage has been posted to the area to alert people about the wildlife hotspots, and authorities will be handing out fines if necessary, officials say.

This warning comes just after a mother bear and two cubs were recently destroyed in Furry Creek after becoming habituated to garbage.

“Conservation officers (CO) are monitoring this bear family closely, and in partnership with the District of Squamish, every effort is being made to keep these bears wild,” reads a District of Squamish news release. “The survival of this bear family, and others, is reliant on public diligence.”

The District is asking residents to store their attractants in a shed or garage, if possible.

Enforcement officers will be looking for unlocked or broken totes. Residents who notice unsecured attractants can file a report to bylaw at 604-815-5067.

Broken totes can be reported to GFL for replacement at 604-892-5607 or [email protected].
