Connecting volunteers in Squamish

New online tool hopes to help local organizations find helpers

The need for volunteers may be greater than ever in Squamish, but finding and connecting volunteers has been an on-going issue — so a local group is crafting a solution.

With no volunteer centre in Squamish, the Squamish Nonprofit Network decided to use an online tool: the VolunteerConnector. In collaboration with Under One Roof, the four-month regional project launched in February after receiving funding from 100 Women Who Care Squamish and the District.

A recently added feature is the COVID-19 filter, which helps organizations get more immediate help.

"At a time where people have more available time, and a need to connect with and support others, we can help facilitate those things in safe and meaningful ways," a press release said.

Under One Roof will also have pop-up volunteer centres — both physical and virtual — when the new community hub opens in September.

So far, 10 local nonprofits and organizations have signed up for VolunteerConnector. A webinar on Zoom will have more details on April 9 at 10 a.m. Tune it at https://zoom.us/j/542297297 with meeting ID: 542 297 297.

As National Volunteer Week is just around the corner, a volunteer engagement workshop on April 20 will be hosted on Zoom at 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Get login details at [email protected].

The previously planned Brennan Park volunteer event by the Squamish Nonprofit Network, scheduled for April 19, has been cancelled.
