The District of Squamish has awarded a $1.3-million agreement to a Ford dealership called Metro Motors Limited for the municipality’s vehicle fleet.

Under this five-year agreement, the company would provide up to 94% of the District’s vehicle needs.

The previous five-year deal expired in 2018 and cost over $1.5 million.

Some heavily specialized vehicles such as fire trucks, heavy equipment and electric vehicles will not be covered by this deal.

“With this in mind, it is relevant to note that the Public Works Department is actively pursuing electrification of the District’s vehicle pool,” reads a staff report. “Staff are proposing to replace up to six existing light duty vehicles with electric models in 2020 and 2021.”

Staff said that technology for electric heavy duty trucks is still in its infancy. They recommended a “measured approach to fleet electrification.”
