A major development slated for Brackendale comes with a $45-million barrier that will protect the area from a landslide on the Cheekye Fan.

The province, the District and the developer have picked out an expert panel to help advise the creation of a debris flow barrier, which is a condition of the Cheekeye Neighbourhood development.

Ideally, preliminary blueprints for the design will be available around May.

Before the Cheekeye Neighbourhood development goes ahead, the District has to consider a debris barrier to help shield any homes from a potential landslide, because the area has been deemed a potential hazard zone.

General manager Gary Buxton said the annual cost for maintaining this structure could be about $919,000, but it may get taken down to $534,000 if the municipality gets help from the province's Disaster Financial Assistance fund.

The Cheekeye Neighbourhood Plan is by Sqomish Sea to Sky Developments Limited Partnership, a partnership between Squamish Nation (Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw) and developers Squamish Cornerstone Developments.

The housing project includes 537 small and medium single-family lots; zoning for a tiny home village; 678 multifamily units and a commercial area with retail, community care, business services, a daycare and school.
