After death, some donation bins still in town

Despite the District’s decision to pull out donation bins, some of them still remain out.

A high-profile death in West Vancouver in December prompted Squamish and other communities to pull out their donation bins last month. However, in Squamish, several remain because they are on private property.

Natasha Golbeck, senior director of community services, said that letters advising those owners to take them away were sent. The only bin still on District-owned land is the one at the landfill, because it has an attendant, she said.

Council will hear about Squamish Canyon in coming months

After gaining steam with an online crowd-equity campaign, the proponents of Squamish Canyon have put forth a temporary use application to the District.

Director of planning Jonas Velaniskis said staff is still processing the application, but said it could be coming for an initial review in the spring.

At some point, there should be a public information hearing regarding the matter, during which residents can voice their concerns.
