Donations still needed and welcome

The Squamish Food Bank wants clients to know it is still operating during the pandemic.

"Squamish Food Bank staff and volunteers are committed to taking care of our neighbours and will make every attempt to remain open during the Coronavirus outbreak," said the Food Bank's Linda Kelly-Smith in a news release on Sunday.

The non-profit is open the first and third Wednesdays of each month and is located in the BC Squamish Rail Yards (opposite the West Coast Railway Heritage Park).

The food bank will be changing a few of its operating procedures, however.

Instead of entering the building to collect food in a grocery store manner, participants will be provided with a pre-made hamper at the main entrance.

"These hampers will be prepared by our volunteers following guidelines from Public Health and BC Centre for Disease Control."

Hampers will be available at the door of the Food Bank this Wednesday, March 18. Hours of operation have been extended to between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

"With these two extra hours we are hoping to avoid crowded situations and encourage social distancing," Smith said.

These changes are until further notice.

Smith also notes that the outbreak may affect what the food bank receives in donated food.

The community can help by purchasing some non-perishable items and putting them in the bin at your local grocery store.
