The federal government says it’ll be giving over $100 million over six years to create a British Columbia Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund.
“This money will focus on salmon habitat protection and restoration as well as ensuring the fish and seafood sector in British Columbia is positioned for long-term environmental and economic sustainability,” Fisheries and Oceans said in a news release.
The goal is to support projects focused on science partnerships, innovation, clean technology adoption, and green infrastructure investments that improve productivity, sustainability and safety, the agency said.
Edith Tobe of the Squamish River Watershed Society said it’s unlikely the society will be able to access this new money, due to the way the way the funding is structured.
However, Randall Lewis, an environmental co-ordinator with the Squamish Nation, said the Nation may be able to use some of it.
