A man has died backcountry skiing south of  Whistler.

The skier fell into a tree-well while skiing with a group in the Brandywine Bowl ski and snowmobile area, in the afternoon of Dec. 31.

Despite the efforts of Whistler Search and Rescue members and BC Ambulance paramedics, the man in his early 30s did not survive.

"This is the third backcountry death in the Sea to Sky this week with an additional number of near-misses," said Sgt. Sascha Banks in a news release.

On Monday, two snow-bikers died following a Pemberton avalanche.

In Squamish on Monday, a snowboarder fell into a sinkhole on the Red Heather Hut trail but was quickly rescued by a group nearby who had avalanche equipment.

"It appears this current incident, as with the one on Monday, the group had all the knowledge, skills, equipment, and receivers necessary. If these unfortunate events can happen to the most experienced, this can happen to anyone. Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and responders and we are asking those who come to our area to adventure do so with the utmost safety in mind."

Whistler RCMP is working with the BC Coroners Service to investigate the circumstances leading up to the most recent skier’s death.

Police ask if anyone has any information and has not spoken to police about this incident that they contact the Whistler RCMP at 604-932-3044.
