Beloved Squamish mom Muriel "Mouse" Hanson has died.

The single parent of two girls died of cancer on Sunday, her mother Sue Hanson Yates announced on her daughter's Facebook page.

"Today she decided it was time to leave us," the announcement read.

About a year ago, Hanson found a lump in her nose that was later diagnosed as cancer.

Earlier this month, she received the devastating news that she had Leptomeningeal carcinomatosis (LC) in her brain and spine.

LC is a rare and often terminal complication of cancer where the disease spreads to the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

Saturday night, family surrounded Hanson to say goodbye.

"Last night we had a pizza party with her and shared stories and laughed about all the fun times had with her," her mom said.

Sunday at 1 p.m., "she took her last breath. It was calm and peaceful and she was listening to her favourite song 'Sign of the Times.'  We will all miss her terribly," Yates said.

The Chief spoke with Hanson shortly after her recent terminal diagnoses and though she was in extreme pain at the time, her thoughts were on her girls more than on anything else.

Yates will care for her daughters going forward. Several fundraisers are underway to help Yates to, among other things, expand her trailer to include rooms for the girls. That renovation will likely cost between $30,000 to $40,000, Yates said.

To donate via an email transfer, send to shansonhousefund@gmail.com.

A "Muriel & Family 'FUN'draiser, is scheduled for Feb. 2. from, 12 to 5 p.m. starting at Squishy's Fun Zone and heading to HappiMess at Eaglewind.

A celebration of life for Hanson is set for Feb. 16 at Squamish's Totem Hall at 2 p.m. Attendees are asked to come with stories that could be shared with Hanson's daughters.
