The Squamish Chief has won best newspaper among B.C. community publications of its circulation size at the annual Ma Murray Awards.

Since 2005, the paper has won Gold 10 times.

The award is for general excellence, which takes into account news coverage, photography, advertising, layout and design, and just about every facet of the publication.

“This is really a top-notch professionally produced community newspaper,” according to the judge’s decision.

Of special note was the photography, as the judges noted the photographs in the paper were the quality they were looking for.

The Powell River Peak took Silver and Gulf Islands Driftwood took Bronze.

The Ma Murray Awards are hosted every year by the B.C. Yukon Community NewsMedia Association, which represents community news organizations throughout those two regions.

Usually, the awards are held at the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond, but due to the pandemic, this year they were held online.

These awards bear the namesake of Margaret “Ma” Murray, a legend in small-town Canadian newspapers.

Born in 1888, she would make a name for herself as editor of the Bridge-River Lillooet News. She later published the Alaska Highway News in Fort St. John.
