50th Anniversary picnic set

Do plan on attending the 50th Anniversary Community Picnic  (free) on Monday (Aug. 4) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the O’Siyam Pavilion Park on Cleveland Avenue. It is hosted by the District of Squamish in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the District of Squamish’s incorporation. The district’s sister city, Shimizu, Japan will have representatives from there in attendance.

A popular event each month is the Acoustic Jam and it will be held at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Sunday (Aug. 3) from 7:30 to 10 p.m.

Registrations are now being taken for Vacation Bible School sponsored by the Squamish Community Church at 38647 Buckley Avenue from August 11 to 15 from 9 a.m. to noon each day. Children entering grade one to six are invited to participate in bible stories, crafts, songs, games and more. The cost is $30 and to enroll your child or for more information please call (604) 815-8426.

Lawn bowling will be held on Tuesdays (August 5 and 12) at 10 a.m. each week and please register at the Squamish Seniors Centre. Paint and sketch sessions will be held each Wednesday in August at 10 a.m. and one-on-one computer tutoring is available each Wednesday from 1 to 4 p.m. I’ll have more information next week, but a bus trip for seniors to the North Shore Night Market is planned on Aug. 22.

The next distribution date for the Squamish Food Bank will be Wednesday (Aug. 6) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Alano Club on Third Avenue.

The WOW riders will meet on Monday (Aug. 4) at 9:30 a.m. at the Squamish Adventure Centre and ride the trails as much as possible to Brackendale and possibly the airport. For more information, call Shirley at (604) 898-5715.

The Over the Hill Hikers will meet on Tuesday (Aug. 5) at 9 a.m. at the corner of Ross and Government roads for a High Falls hike. For more information, call Heather at (604) 892-9003.

The Tantalus Walking Club will meet on Thursday (Aug. 7) at 10 a.m. at the Squamish Adventure Centre for a walk to Brennan Park Recreation Centre and back. For more information, call Joyce at (604) 898-5594.

The Hearts in Motion Walking Club will meet tomorrow (Friday, Aug. 1) at 10 a.m. at the far end of Alice Lake (large parking lot) for a walk around the lake. For more information, call Yvonne at (604) 898-5268 or myself at (604) 815-0152.
