Author offers guide to youth sports

Cedar Valley Waldorf School is proud to present Luis Fernando Llosa who will give a talk entitled How to be the Best Sports Parent for your Child: Want Success? Ensure a Creative, Dynamic, Life-Long Love of Sport for your Young Athlete at Quest University on Tuesday (Oct. 28) at 7:30 pm. Llosa is an award-winning Sports Illustrated journalist, investigative reporter, and youth sports speaker who recently authored the book Beyond Winning with Kim John Payne (Simplicity Parenting) and Scott B. Lancaster (former National Football League youth sports director). The book is a candid, practical guide to help parents navigate the high-pressure world of youth sports. It is that time of year again for the annual Seniors Immunization and Wellness Fair and it will be held in the Squamish Seniors Centre (1201 Village Green Way) on Wednesday (Oct. 29) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The flu immunizations are free for those 65 years and up, and a reminder, wear clothing with short sleeves and be sure to take your Care Card along. The many tables set up will be filled with health tips and displays, and health caregivers and others will be on hand to answer your questions. Complementary tea/coffee and fruit will be available and the Clock Tower Café will open for breakfast and/or lunch. As parking is limited, public transportation or carpooling is suggested.

The mystery of the Magic Pumpkin event is being held at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park each day starting today (Thursday, Oct. 23) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and through to Thursday (Oct. 30). The Halloween experience is where children go through the magic pumpkin patch and try to choose the magical pumpkin. The “big train ride” happens once a day at 10:30 a.m. but there are also pumpkin arts and crafts, pumpkin bowling, mini rail and other activities to keep the kids busy. Each child will take home a pumpkin, and the admission fee is $12 per child and parents are free.

The annual general meeting for the Squamish Hospice Society will be held on Monday (Oct. 27) at 7 p.m. in the second floor boardroom at Hilltop House. The invitation is extended to all residents and during the evening the final draw for the Hospice raffle will take place, and refreshments will be served.

Learn to quilt with the Squamish Quilters. Classes are planned on Wednesday (Nov. 5), Saturday 9Nov. 15) and Wednesday (Dec. 3), and each session is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. These classes are for you if you are looking to learn the basics of quilt making. The annual Kid’s Toy and Clothing sale is this Saturday (Oct. 25) from 9 a.m. to noon in the Brennan Park Recreation Centre.

The Halloween theme luncheon at the Squamish Seniors Centre on Thursday (Oct. 30) at 11:45 a.m. will feature hot turkey sandwiches and fries, and pumpkin pie. Tickets at $9 for members and $10 for non-members must be purchased by Oct. 29. There will be a prize draw fir those who arrive in costume, and the well-loved Mamquam Elementary School choir will entertain. Nancy Warwick from Squamish Public Library will also have a display of books and novels to check out. Big Buddy Book Time is Tuesday (Oct. 28) at 2 p.m. when seniors read to children in kindergarten and grade one from Squamish Elementary School.

The annual general meeting for the Squamish Environment Society will be held at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Sunday (Oct. 26) at 7 p.m. What is the environmental agenda for our mayoral candidates? The presentation from 8 to 9 p.m. will introduce candidates’ plans on the subject.

This evening (Thursday, Oct. 23) conservationist and photographer Ian McAllister will be at the Squamish Public Library at 6:30 p.m. to speak on The Great Bear Wild Tour.

For those who are grieving the loss of a loved one, the Courage to Grieve Bereavement Support Group is being offered by the Squamish Hospice Society. Gatherings will be held each Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. starting Oct. 29 to Dec. 3. The location is the Squamish Hospice office at 38140 Behrner Drive (the small building next to Hilltop House). The Women’s Auxiliary to Squamish General Hospital will be selling raffle tickets for their Christmas bazaar on Nov. 29. Members will be at Nesters Market tomorrow (Oct. 24), Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. The cash prizes are $300, $200 and $100. For youngsters, three-inch pocket bear toys in costume are available at the gift shop and also a good selection of young adult books.
