An expression of support

EDITOR,

About a year ago, I voiced my support for the Sea to Sky Gondola proposal and I would like to follow up now with a letter to the editor to explain why. I love the idea of bringing tourism to Squamish that would be available to people of every physical ability. I enjoy hiking up the Stawamus Chief and taking in the vistas below but I am also very grateful that I am in good enough health to tackle these heights. A gondola will allow a far larger population to experience what only a small percentage of our population ever does: a view of the majestic greenery of our forests, the expanse of blue ocean, the craggy mountain peaks and our beautiful town centre. As an environmentalist, biologist and outdoor enthusiast, I want more people to see the Squamish that I see on a daily basis, to promote our productive estuary and provide education on the history and heritage of Squamish that attracted me to move here so many years ago. Forestry and logging are far from dead in our town and what better location to witness the log sorts, deep sea port and reforestation than from a perch well above many of these areas! The gondola makes good sense to me economically as well as it will provide a tourist attraction to rival Whistler. People visiting Shannon Falls and Stawamus Chief provincial parks will now be able to complete their day with a beautiful ride overseeing both of these amazing features. And for a town that boasts being the Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada, I cannot see a better fit than a gondola to round off our recreation potential. I for one will be lining up to take family, friends, and new acquaintances up the gondola to tell them the story of Squamish, my home!
