Are we living beyond our means?

So here we are, halfway through our term. It is my second Council Corner and I feel like I must discuss the budget. There are costs that are out of our control, such as aging infrastructure and RCMP costs. Add to that a few things that we want/need.

So here we are, halfway through our term. It is my second Council Corner and I feel like I must discuss the budget. There are costs that are out of our control, such as aging infrastructure and RCMP costs. Add to that a few things that we want/need. All of these costs result in a 10 per cent increase in taxation in 2013.

With the amenities and services the citizens of Squamish experience, some find 10 per cent acceptable, but to others, this increase means it is time to move. I have thought long and hard about this. Are we living beyond our means? And how can we get back on track? Spend less? Tax more? Or create a larger tax base?

I know over the next year I will be focusing on spending less rather than taxing more. This will include asking staff and council about ways to spend less. Most importantly, I will also be looking at increasing the tax base of Squamish. We must work together to bring businesses and jobs to our town.

If any of you have an idea of a way to relocate a business, increase a business, start a business or a way to market our town, let me know. As your elected representative, I will help in any way I can. Remember, no idea is a bad idea.

On a different note, 2014 will be a year of great celebration, as 2014 is our centennial. We are 100 years young. I see this as a turning point in Squamish, a time to unite and support each other. There are many groups already hard at work, planning their centennial celebration. I call on all school groups, interest groups, teams, clubs and associations to make that project happen, time to grow or start an event, time to do something out of the ordinary. This is a time to take action under the banner of our centennial. What are you doing for 2014 and why?

If I can help with any initiatives related to those mentioned above, please email [email protected] or phone (604) 389-9278.
