Editor's note: This is a copy of a letter to Squamish’s mayor and council. It was copied to The Chief for publication.
I am new to Squamish. I moved here less than one year ago because I love it here. I have friends here and I love the lifestyle. I also moved here because this town sold me on the premise that it was the Recreational Capital of Canada — not an industry town. I do not support liquefied natural gas (LNG) and I do not like your LNG committee approach.
Your intention to form a group of residents to assess the proposed development lacks fair representation from our community and completely omits the real question at hand, which is, “Do we support the idea of having a liquefied gas plant in our community?”
To me, that is the question the committee should be mandated to focus on, not the question of “how” the LNG plant will be built, if they will use water or air to cool the gas, if they will use electricity or natural gas. Those questions are putting the cart before the horse.
As elected officials, you should represent the majority voice of the citizens. Does the majority of Squamish even support you or the LNG proposal? No one really knows the true answer, but if the numbers were counted, my bet is that you would have a leading majority of residents totally opposed to what you are doing.
Why is the community at large not being asked the real question? Why are the residents of Squamish not given the right to weigh in on something that will impact our community for generations to come?
