Auxiliary to celebrate 60 years

In the last two issues of The Chief, there have been excellent articles on the upcoming 20th anniversary celebration for the Howe Sound Performing Arts Association. The concert, called Pro'Ject Sound, blends music and photography and will feature pianist Sarah Hagen accompanied by images from the Squamish Valley Photo Club. The evening also includes an Art Show and Soirée. The special event will be held in St. John's Anglican Church on Saturday (Sept. 22) at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and children, and free admission for students. They will be available at Billie's Flower House and at the church.

Another event happening this month is the 60th anniversary celebration for the Women's Auxiliary to Squamish General Hospital. Over these many years of volunteer service, the members have raised thousands of dollars for medical equipment for the hospital and they have also purchased special beds, chairs, etc., for Hilltop House. The milestone anniversary takes place Friday (Sept. 28) from 2 to 4 p.m. when the community is invited to the gift shop and cafeteria area for cake and coffee or tea.

The Howe Sound Women's Centre, through the second-stage pilot "Project Melany," is offering an open support group for women who have experienced abuse in their intimate relationships. There is no requirement to register or commit to a certain number of sessions; women can join at anytime. Child care and light refreshments will be provided, and transportation can be arranged if needed. Sessions are held each Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Trinity Hall, Squamish United Church on Fourth Avenue. If you wish more information, please call the centre at (604) 892-5748.

The Adult Evening Book Club will meet on Thursday (Sept. 27) at 6:30 p.m. in the Squamish Public Library to discuss the books The Yiddish Policeman's Union by Michael Chabon and Hot Art by Joshua Knelman.

The Squamish Food Bank has its annual general meeting on Tuesday (Sept. 25) at 7 p.m. in the Alano Club at 37978 Third Ave. Anyone wishing more information on the food bank is invited to attend.

On Wednesday (Sept. 26) the Caregivers Support Group will meet at the Seniors Centre from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Anyone wishing more information is asked to call Donna Howard or Nadine Goodgrove at (604) 892-6400.

A free six-session workshop for adults with any kind of ongoing pain will be offered at the Seniors Centre on Tuesdays from Oct. 9 to Nov. 13 from 12:15 to 2:45 p.m. To register for the Chronic Pain Self Management Program please call toll free to 1-866-902-3767 or email [email protected].

The Rotary 200 Club winners for September are: Margot Caspar ($100), Bent Mortensen ($120), Peter Martin ($130) and Patrick Haberl ($150).

On Tuesday (Sept. 25) at 11 a.m., the second annual Wrap-Up Lawn Bowling Tournament next to the Seniors Centre will be held. New players are welcome and the $5 cost is for refreshments and treats. The monthly soup and sandwich day at the centre is Thursday (Sept. 27) at noon. Remember to get your tickets early to be entered in the early bird draw. Nancy from Squamish Public Library will be at the luncheon with a display of interesting books.

Tonight (Thursday, Sept. 20) at 7 p.m., Barry MacDonald, author of Boy Smarts, will be the guest speaker at a parent workshop sponsored by the Sea to Sky District Parent Advisory Council. The event will be held in the Eagle Eye Theatre at 7 p.m. and tickets are $5 each or donations of canned food for local food banks.

Big Brothers/Big Sisters have a request for volunteers who can spend an hour a week with at-risk children in the Squamish, Whistler and Pemberton areas.
