As a mother of a newborn, I worry about my daughter's future. My partner and I came to Squamish in large part because of the area's astounding beauty and our great love for the outdoors. But each day, I grow more dismayed by how rapidly Squamish is changing from unrestrained and terribly planned (if planned at all) development. I fear that as my daughter grows older she will see Squamish turned into just another strip-malled Vancouver suburb.
Recent reports about the proposed Garibaldi at Squamish ski resort are especially distressing. The resort, which would include two golf courses, 6,000 homes and apartments, and 25 ski lifts, would devastate our community and the environment. This project, which is opposed by most local residents, should be stopped.
We have a responsibility to protect Squamish's wildlife and environment for future generations.
