Sometimes, things happen exactly as they should.
The SPCA in Squamish needed to raise funds to care for the many creatures left in its care. While the volunteers and staff love animals, it takes more than love to house, feed and provide veterinary care to the many dogs, cats and other animals that pass through its doors. It takes money.
Meanwhile, at Capilano University’s Squamish campus, a class of marketing students needed some real-world experience, a way to practise what they had been learning from books and professors, a way to make a difference in the world. When the SPCA requested the class’s help, the students got together in groups of four to come up with proposals for a new, exciting event to raise money for the organization.
The winning proposal was Bets for Pets, which will have a Casino Royale theme with blackjack dealers, bingo, ka-plinko and big spin games, all to benefit the little creatures that need our care at the animal shelter. It promises to be a fun night, and participants have a chance to win great prizes such as passes for skiing at Whistler Blackcomb, kiteboarding lessons, and passes for the Sea to Sky Gondola. Bets for Pets will take place at Chances Casino next week, on Thursday, April 16.
It’s one of many positive things happening in Squamish.
Another is at the Easter Seals Camp Squamish, where organizers are planning a new event to raise money for children with disabilities so they can attend the camp. If you talk to children who have been there or their parents, you’ll know how special Camp Squamish is to these children; for many, it’s the highlight of their year, the time when they can be a true kid, a time when they learn about their abilities rather than their disabilties. The camp even includes a wheelchair-accessible treehouse, the only one of its kind in Canada, plus big swings and a climbing wall. But these children require adult help so they can soar with these activities, so it’s an expensive camp to run. The organizers are hoping Squamish people will step forward for its new 24 Hour Camp Challenge fundraiser and help send kids to the place where their dreams come true.
We have no doubt that Squamish residents will step forward to help.
