Bright future for winsports

Editor,

The Squamish Windsports Society strongly supports the plans which have been developed by the Squamish Oceanfront Development Corporation (SODC) and the sub area plan developed by the District of Squamish.

We are very encouraged by the area set aside for the windsports park and look forward to working with the SODC and the district on the details of the access features, the landscape and overall design.

Our society operates the Squamish Spit as a windsports park, under lease from the District of Squamish.

During this season, more than 300 members and several hundred day users enjoyed wind surfing and kiteboarding at the Squamish Spit.

Interest in windsports has been growing steadily largely due to our location and favourable winds, and usage at the spit is reaching its safe limit.

While our society is committed to continue operating the spit, we also look forward to the development of a new windsports park at the Squamish Oceanfront because it will provide new opportunities and more capacity for residents and visitors to safely undertake outdoor recreation.

We believe the next key steps are to work on designing the windsports park to be safe, accessible and user-friendly.

Most importantly, the society would like to help ensure that the park becomes an attractive amenity for the benefit of the whole community of Squamish.

We look forward to working with the District of Squamish on what will become another amazing feature of our great town.
