Canada’s 147th birthday will be celebrated across our country on Tuesday (July 1).

In Squamish celebrations will begin with a march from the Rotary clock on Cleveland Avenue at 10:30 a.m. 

The march will be led by the Black Tusk Caledonia Pipe Band and members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 down to the cenotaph for the official flag raising ceremony at 11 a.m.

The day’s festivities take place at the O’Siyam Pavilion and park area and will include live music from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., dog agility performances, a classic car show, a loggers sports demo, camp activity centre, multicultural centre, many activities for the whole family, Canada Day market, food fair and beer garden. 

To end a busy day will be the fire spinning at 9:30 p.m. followed by the fireworks at 10 p.m.

On Canada Day, Totem Hall (Squamish Nation) will celebrate the 35th anniversary of this special multicultural day, when the community is invited from 1 to 5 p.m. 

Participants include Squamish Nation members, members of the Sikh Temple, Bahai faith, Filipino community and United and Anglican churches. Those of all faiths are welcome. 

The feast includes great ethnic food from many countries and it is served early in the day. A tribute to many folks (including volunteers) who have passed away will be observed. 

There will be a demonstration and entertainment throughout the afternoon.

Canada Day celebrations on July 1 at the Britannia Mine Museum are special this year as it celebrates 110 years since the Britannia Mine opened in 1904. 

Pins, flags and cupcakes will be given to visitors and, activities include underground tours, gold panning and a chance to view the new exhibits celebrating this special milestone. The interactive storytelling entitled Live, Work, Play will have participation by the audience. 

The 110 years Photo Exhibit located in the conveyor shed celebrates the history of the mine.

A free barbecue (adults only) is planned at the Legion Week Celebration on Saturday (June 28) from 3 to 6 p.m. with meat draws, prizes and silent auction. 

Proceeds go to the Service Dogs for Veterans with P.T.S.D. Donations to the Squamish Food Bank would be appreciated. The evening includes the music of The Squamptones starting at 7 p.m.

The Squamish Food Bank will distribute grocery hampers on Wednesday (July 2) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Alano Club on Third Avenue.

Registrations are now being taken at the Squamish Seniors Centre for the summer Keep Fit program. 

The beginner Level 1 class will remain the same on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. from July 3 to Aug. 12. Sit and stand Level 2 will have one class only on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 to 11 a.m. from June 30 to Aug. 31. 

The advanced cardio fit Level 3 will remain the same with classes from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting Juy 3 to Aug. 14. 

Men on the Move classes will be Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. from July 2 to Aug. 13.

The annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event sponsored by the Howe Sound Women’s Centre will be held on Saturday (July 5) starting at the Squamish Junction Pavilion. 

Money raised will help support women and children affected by violence and abuse and, contributions of $15 or more will receive a tax receipt. 

Support the fellows in our community as they don the big red high heels and try to walk a mile. They in turn are helping to reach the fundraising target of $10,000.

The WOW riders will meet at Canadian Tire on Monday (June 30) at 10 a.m. for a ride through the golf course trails and then to downtown and back.

The Tantalus Walking Club will meet at Canadian Tire on Thursday (July 3) at 10 a.m. for a walk along the Mamquam trail to the golf course.
