Candidate responds

EDITOR, I am writing in response to "Sign complaint" (Letters, Chief, Nov. 11). The signs in question are my "Squamish hearts Phil" signs.

EDITOR,

I am writing in response to "Sign complaint" (Letters, Chief, Nov. 11). The signs in question are my "Squamish hearts Phil" signs. All the materials for those signs was donated and the work that was put into making and installing them was all from volunteers. I have had overwhelming support and positive feedback from the community regarding those signs. A random person at the Brew Pub told me a great story where the end of the story was his mom saying how much she liked those signs. If they are such an eyesore, how come half of them have gone missing or have been stolen? I have filed a complaint with the RCMP but most likely some of my individually crafted signs are gone forever.

I am not sure what the surroundings in Mississauga, Ont., are like, Mr. Carter, but they can't be much nicer than our surroundings. I will give you the benefit of the doubt, perhaps you were having a bad day I still barely notice the signs as our more majestic surroundings still capture my imagination. It uplifts me, so I wonder how troubling it must have been to wade through the nebulous universe of ugly signs that our town has become and single out a sign with a heart on it. Then to call that sign, with the universal symbol for love on it, an eyesore, I have to say "breathe deeply and look within." I will give you the benefit of the doubt for your last statement about our town looking like hell being as you from Mississauga, Ont. Maybe you have a firsthand knowledge of what hell is like.

Your suggestion that town council should introduce several new initiatives that would limit sign placement on public spaces may actually have some merit. I am certain if the wrong council gets on they could eat up countless hours and energy debating the merits of these democracy-limiting proposals... The signs are up for little more than a month every three years.

It has been an honour and a privilege to participate in the race with such a great group of people. It truly does take immense courage and conviction to run. My unsolicited top five endorsements go to Ted, Patty, Bryan, Nate, and Sue for various reasons based mostly on my last couple months of effort and my personal interactions with all the candidates. This is the top five people, in my humble opinion, who all bring different skills to the job site and all share a great love for the community. I urge all residents of Squamish to do their homework and vote for Phil on Saturday, Nov. 19. The fate of Squamish hangs in the balance.

Sincerely,

Phil Audet
