Celebrate Mardi Gras at St. John's

On that date, the aquatic centre at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre will be open for swimming from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. and the ice arena will hold a family skate from 12:30 to 2 p.m., followed by public skating from 2:15 to 3 p.m. Tomorrow (Friday, Feb. 8) is Pro-D Day and a toonie swim will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. and a toonie skating from 1:15 to 3:15 p.m.

The Squamish Environmental Society has its monthly bird count on Sunday (Feb. 10) with everyone meeting at the Howe Sound Inn and Brew Pub at 8 a.m. The group expects to see at least 50 species of birds at this count. For more information, please call Judith at (604) 892-3340.

St. John's Anglican Church (1930 Diamond Rd.) has a Mardi Gras Pancake Supper on Tuesday (Feb. 12) from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and admission is by donation. New Orleans- and Mardi Gras-inspired music will fill the church hall for this event.

Do plan on attending the Valentine's Day Brunch at the Shannon Falls Retirement Residence on Third Avenue on Thursday (Feb.14) starting at 11:30 a.m. It promises to be a delicious meal complete with special Valentine's cake, all for $8. St. John Ambulance's Seniors in Safety information session is planned at the Seniors Centre on Wednesday (Feb. 13) at 1 p.m. and there is still time to sign up by calling (604) 848-6898 or drop by the centre to register.

The Howe Sound Secondary School Outdoor Leadership Program is having a fundraising gala and silent auction tonight (Feb. 7) at 6 p.m. at the Eagle Eye Theatre. Speakers include John Howe, a pioneering member of Squamish Search and Rescue, and Paralympic alpine skier Matt Hallatt. The auction includes more than $10,000 worth of gear, clothing, accommodation and outdoor activities. Tickets cost $10 and are available at the door.

Valentine's Day at the Squamish Public Library is presenting "Fall in Love" with your library on Thursday (Feb. 14) from 3 to 5 p.m. Check out the new and exciting materials and services that will make you really appreciate the library. There is much more, so be sire to stop by the library on that date.

The Hilltop House Support Society will meet on Thursday (Feb. 14) at 9:30 a.m. Interested community members are welcome to attend.

The North Shore Schizophrenia Society is offering an Intensive Education Course for family members of the seriously mentally ill and this includes depression, bipolar, schizophrenia and anxiety disorders. The sessions will be held each Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Squamish from Feb. 12 to April 30. As space is limited, you are asked to register as soon a possible by calling (604) 926-0856 or (604) 849-2252.

A Valentine's Breakfast at the Seniors Centre is planned for Thursday (Feb. 14) from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Enjoy Eggs Benedict, hash browns, tea or coffee for $10 for the full order, or $7 for a half order. Please pre-purchase tickets at the front desk at the centre.

Nancy from the Squamish Public Library will be at the Shannon Falls Retirement Residence on Third Avenue on Thursday (Feb. 14) at 2:30 p.m. with a display of books that residents can check out.

Many residents of Hilltop House (HTH) have stories to tell of their childhood including school years, working days, their marriage, children, grandchildren and more. The HTH staff would appreciate volunteers who would be partnered with a resident in collecting their life memories and hopefully record the information on a computer, tape recorder, etc. It is hoped the volunteer would visit the resident once a week and if interested, please call Cindy at HTH at (604) 892-9337 ext 5 or drop by and see her.

The Robbie Burns-inspired luncheon at the Senior Centre on Jan. 31 was well attended and adding to the theme of the day, a group if seniors led by Joan Hainer had everyone singing a number of well-known Scottish songs. The luncheon was also a time to bid a pleasant farewell to Janet Gugins, manager of recreation services for the District of Squamish for the past 28 years. Janet was presented with a bouquet of flowers and wished a happy retirement.

The Over the Hill Hikers will meet at the climbers parking part at 9 a.m. on Tuesday (Feb. 12) for a Smoke Bluffs/Octopus Garden hike. For more information, call Heather at (604) 892-9003.
