Children's Health Fair on tap this weekend

An annual event each year is the Children's Health Fair and the date this year is Saturday (June 1) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Brennan Park Recreation Centre.

It is also time for the kindergarten immunizations, car safety checks and fun things like face painting and games. The Squamish Public Library will have a display, and information on childcare resources and more be available.

Children of all ages enjoy participating in a Day Out with Thomas at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park. The dates are the next two Saturdays and Sundays (June 1 and 2, 8 and 9) from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. As well as taking a ride on Thomas, meet Sir Topham Hat and get involved in other fun theme activities. In honour of Seniors' Week the Shannon Falls Retirement Residence on Third Avenue is hosting a Strawberry Tea on Tuesday (June 4) at 2:30 p.m. There is no charge, but you are asked to call Ray at (604) 848-2000 ext. 5004 to reserve your place.

Three well-known Squamish artists - Maureen Brown, Freda Hoff and Toby Jaxon - will have their beautiful creations displayed at the Squamish Adventure Centre from June 3 to July 2. These displays are possible through VISUALS, the Squamish Valley Artists Society and sales are available at the gift shop each day from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30 to 3 p.m. a group of dedicated volunteers help run the bingo afternoons for the Hilltop House residents. It would be much appreciated if other folks would consider helping out during the summer months once or twice a week. No experience necessary, just show up and lend a hand.

The Squamish Food Bank will open its doors for grocery distribution on Wednesday (June 5) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Alano Club on Third Avenue.

An evening that is always a pleasant affair is attending the monthly Acoustic Jam gathering at the Brackendale Art Gallery and the date is Sunday (June 2) from 7:30 to 10 p.m.

A Tennis Club meeting will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday (June 3) at the Seniors Centre and if not able to attend, please phone the centre at (604) 848-6898 to express your interest. Lawn bowling begins on Tuesday (June 4) at 10:30 a.m. and every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the summer. Computer tutoring will occur each Wednesday in June from 1 to 4 p.m.

Dr. Jonathan Warner from Quest University will be at the Squamish Public Library tonight (Thursday, May 30) at 6:30 p.m. and the subject is Economists Telling Tales.

The Squamish Valley Quilters will wind up their season on Wednesday (June 5) at 9 a.m. at the Sandman Hotel for a social sew day until 5 p.m. when you are welcome to join others for dinner before the business meeting at 7 p.m. The group will next meet in September and for more information, please call (604) 898-1431.

The annual general meeting for the Squamish Seniors Centre Society will be held at the centre on Wednesday (June 12) from 2:30 to 4 p.m. The guest speaker will be Janet Hickey-Blackburn, VGH Manager for Home and Community Care in the Sea to Sky Corridor.

Next Monday (June 3) an evening of bingo will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 with doors open at 5:30 p.m.

The Women's Auxiliary to Squamish General Hospital expresses thanks to Wal-Mart, Nesters and Save-On-Foods for accommodating members selling tickets for their recent raffle. The WA greatly appreciates the support received from the community as all funds raised help provide medical equipment for our local hospital.

All 10-to-15 year olds are invited to attend an origami event at the Squamish Public Library on Wednesday (June 5) from 4 to 5 p.m. Come out and learn how to make some easy paper creations like airplanes, animals, throwing stars and balloons.
