Christmas bazaar season is upon us

What are you doing tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 19)? Why not plan on attending the annual St. John's Anglican Church Bazaar from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.? This popular event features delicious home baking, preserves, sewing and crafts, jewelry and a raffle.

The church is located at 1930 Diamond Rd. (behind London Drugs).

The St. Joseph's Christmas Bazaar is set for Saturday, Nov. 26, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 2449 The Boulevard. In addition to the popular luncheon and tea, the event will feature home baking, crafts, raffles and much more. Come and join the fun.

Come participate in the first Lego-building contest in Squamish, hosted by the Ecole Les Aiglons. The contest is open to children between 5 and 12 years old, and will be a timed Lego-building competition with a maximum of 50 participants. There will be three age categories in which to compete. The Howe Sound Performing Arts Association and Quest University invite you to a special concert at the university on Sunday (Nov. 20) at 2 p.m. when soprano Kelly Coubrough and pianist Laurel Parsons present "As Long As It Isn't Love." Tickets are available at the university and Billie's Bouquet at $20 each. Students of all ages can obtain a ticket by making a small donation.

The Squamish Gardeners will meet at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park at 6:45 p.m. on Monday (Nov. 21). Guest speakers will be the owners of Botanus, a highly successful company in Langley, which supplies bulbs and plants to Canadian gardeners. They will speak about bulbs for the spring garden, and will have bulbs for sale. Non-members are welcome for a $5 drop-in fee.

The next Lunch and Learn Series held at the Squamish Renaissance at 38225 Third Ave. will take place on Wednesday (Nov. 23) starting with lunch from noon to 1 p.m. The speaker, Diane Sheddan, CDE, London Drugs will speak on Diabetes: Understanding the Numbers. Anyone who has been aboard the Polar Express chugging out of the West Coast Railway Park in past years has nothing but good things to say about it. There are two weekends to choose from this year, Nov. 26 and 27, and Dec. 3 and 4. First-class tickets for all ages are $34 plus HST and coach for children two to 15 years is $19 plus HST and adults 16 years and older is $23 plus HST. The Caregivers Support Group will meet on Wednesday (Nov. 23) from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Seniors Centre. Anyone wishing more information is asked to contact Donna Howard or Nadine Goodgrove at (604) 892-6400.

Community Christmas Care (CCC) is gearing up for another busy December as more families and singles really depend and appreciate the hampers and gifts for children each year. Let's lend a hand where we are able by donating non-perishable food items or cash or cheque donations to CCC Box 516, Squamish, B.C. V8B 0A4 or dropped off at the Squamish Credit Union in the Chieftain Mall or check out the website at www.communitychristmascare.com.

It will be a busy time at the Seniors Centre on Thursday (Nov. 24) as the Christmas art show and craft sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is an opportunity to start your Christmas shopping! It is also a monthly soup and sandwich day starting at noon and it would be appreciated if you could purchase your tickets ($9) in advance.

Also mark your calendars for Thursday (Dec. 1) when the Seniors Centre will hold an Open House from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be demos and workshops, cake and refreshments, and great draw prizes!

Once again, a most successful Christmas Bazaar was held by the Women's Auxiliary to the Squamish General Hospital. Members thank the community for their continued support. The raffle winners were: Ruth Gebert ($350), John Granger ($250) and much to my surprise, I won ($125)!

The Screening Mammography Program is at the Squamish Renaissance on Third Avenue from Monday (Nov. 21) to Thursday (Dec. 1). To check if there are still appointments available, please call toll free to 1-800-663-9203. Another service the Women's Auxiliary to the Hospital provides, is volunteering at this clinic to register each person.

Bingo will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 on Monday (Nov. 21) with doors open at 5:30 p.m.

The Adult Evening Book Club at the Squamish Public Library will meet on Thursday (Nov. 24) from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. to discuss the book Shelter by Frances Greenslade. If you have read the book, you are welcome to attend.

Winners in the Rotary 200 Club draw for November are: May Allen ($100), Stein Hoff ($120), Gord Wadden ($130) and Ian and Sheri David ($150).

There is still time for seniors to get on board the bus on Wednesday (Nov. 30) for a casino trip to Hastings Park on the PNE grounds. If interested, please call Elaine (604-898-5463) by Wednesday (Nov. 23).

Registrations are now being taken at the Seniors Centre for winter programs starting in January and that includes all exercise classes.

The cast for Between Shifts Theatre's next production of A Christmas Carol have been in rehearsals for many weeks and are in anticipation of great audiences each night. The play opens at the Brackendale Art Gallery Nov. 24 to 27 and Dec. 1 to 4. Tickets are available at the gallery, the Adventure Centre, Portico Gallery and Billie's Bouquet at $20 for adults and $15 for seniors and students.

The next flu clinic will be held at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre on Wednesday (Nov. 23) from 3 to 6 p.m.

If interested in attending Ann Forry's casting call for children ages seven to 14 years tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 19) or for adults 15 years and up on Sunday (Nov. 20), you are asked to email [email protected]. The location is the Sandman Inn in Squamish.

The Over the Hill Hikers will meet at the Stump Lake parking lot at 9 a.m. on Tuesday 9Nov. 22) for a Bob McIntosh/Made in the Shade hike. To join this group, or for more information, call heather at 604-892-9003.
