Oh boy, it’s September all ready?  I was on Facebook today and saw someone starting a page looking for people interested in being on council; such a good idea to get dialogue going on this one.

There are many issues that face Squamish that could cost millions of dollars and we need good people that will take the time required to make informed discussions.

This is the last full year with the present council, which should make for some interesting meetings. We are starting this year flat out with additional meetings required just to catch up. I really do not like things so busy for that is when we make mistakes.

I made it to Airport Day last weekend, which was interesting. The Lions Club served up pancakes to visiting pilots and hot dogs to the public, earning over $1,000 for their beneficiaries.

There were airplanes to look at, air tours available and kids got airborne in a bouncy castle! I can’t believe how many people flew in from all over the province!

Turns out, Squamish Airport is well-known for flight lessons and Squamish’s proximity to the big city makes it a hub for student pilots, many who go on to become commercial pilots. The runway, wind conditions and mountains make for challenging learning but one pilot told me, “If you can land in Squamish, you can land anywhere!”

So hang on to your hats, this year looks like a few hundred residential units will be starting with no end in sight.

The prices keep astounding me – just as you think it is levelling off, you see new price heights achieved!

I do not understand how it can stay like this, rents so high, the price of ownership unattainable to most and many low-paying jobs. Most local businesses are having a hard time finding people and the salaries do not meet the rents.

Let’s hope that as more units come into the market things will get better. There are incentives available for anyone wanting to build a carriage house or suite so check that out if it works for you. Council will be looking at new progressive types of developments that are more affordable, so if you have any ideas let us know.

For many Squamish people, things are just booming.

It is hard to keep up – we are known to the world and growing fast, so help council make it better! Too many new Squamish people are complacent or not informed.

Spread the word that it is time to engage and remember we are spending millions and millions of YOUR dollars.

Come on baby, let the good times roll.
