The Crave Dining for Dignity event is an annual fundraiser for the Squamish Helping Hands Society and it will be held in the CN Roundhouse and Conference Centre at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park on Saturday (Sept. 27) from 8 to 11 p.m. The evening includes a delicious dinner and wine along with music from the Sea ‘T’ Sky Big Band and Joanne Mackell. 

The auction items include two beautiful paintings by Toby Jaxon, a Fairmont Chateau Whistler package and a Westin Resort and Spa package. Tickets are $100 each and available at Scotties Liquor Store, Squamish Helping Hands Society and online at squamishhelpinghands.ca.

Parents, parents-to-be, care givers and educators are invited to a free series of talks being held by Cedar Valley Waldorf School on Tuesday nights for the next four weeks. The Community Parenting Education Series begins on Tuesday (Sept. 30) with a talk on Child Development From Birth to 21 by CVWS principal Christine Martin. 

On Oct. 7 preschool teacher Astrid Lackner will discuss The Importance of Play and The Great Outdoors. On Oct. 14 join The Squamish Chief’s Millennial Mom columnist Kirsten Andrews for a talk on Building Independence Within the Context of Attachment. And on Oct. 21 teachers Lauren Baldwin and Shannon Johnson will offer Media, Screens and Your Child’s Brain. All talks begin at 7:30 p.m.

Another gathering taking place on Saturday (Sept. 27) from 5 to 8 p.m. is the Squamish Seniors’ Society Fall Barbecue. It will be held in the seniors centre and tickets are $10, which includes hamburgers, salads and dessert. If planning to go, please check to see if there are still tickets available.

The next Squamish Valley Quilter’s Guild gathering will be held on Wednesday (Oct. 1) commencing at 9 a.m. at the Sandman Hotel, when members will work on their own projects or help sew a community quilt. The meeting portion in the evening is from 7 to 9 p.m. New members are always welcome to the guild and any person who enjoys sewing or sharing a textile interest will enjoy this group. Big Buddy Book Time for children in kindergarten and grade one at Squamish Elementary School will be held at the Squamish Seniors’ Centre on Tuesday (Sept. 30) at 2 p.m. and anyone interested in helping out is asked to call the centre at (604) 848-6898.

The Squamish Nation, led by member Alice Guss is hosting three First Nation Weaving classes on Saturday (Sept. 27) in Totem Hall. The first class from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. will focus on wool weaving and basket making. The second class from noon to 2 p.m. revolves around creating your own personal drum. National Seniors Day is Wednesday
(Oct. 1) and the seniors centre will have free coffee and cookies available for visitors.

The Squamish Food Bank will distribute grocery hampers at the Alano Club on Third Avenue from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday (Oct. 1). Once again, donations of fresh produce will be welcome between 9 and 11 a.m.

The Teen Library Club at the Squamish Public Library will meet each Wednesday from 4 to 5 p.m. starting on Wednesday (Oct. 1) when you will have an opportunity to volunteer and help maintain the teen area at the library.

Tickets are still available for the Eagle Watch Gala Dinner and fundraiser to be held on Friday (Oct. 3) in the Executive Suites Hotel. It is sponsored by the Squamish Environmental Society and includes an art exhibit, silent auction, special music and more. Tickets at $85 each are available at the hotel and includes taxes and gratuities.

Richard Wagamese is one of Canada’s foremost First Nation’s authors and storytellers and he will be at Totem Hall on Thursday (Oct. 2) from 5 to 8 p.m. to share his considerable knowledge. Mark your calendar for Sunday (Oct. 5) when the Sea to Sky Singers present their 20th anniversary concert. The location is St. John’s Anglican Church and I believe two performances are planned.
