EDITOR,

Re. "Smoking rules affect senior," Chief, Feb. 11.

Dr. Daly, chief medical officer for Vancouver Coastal Health, has stated the goal of the new "no smoking on the property" policy is the protection of patients, residents, staff and visitors. This is a lofty goal and a commendable goal.

However, there are a few adults who smoke and the goal must not be to banish these seniors, nor trample on their needs, and the needs of their families.

The existing smoke area at Hilltop House consists of an open-air site, covered by a roof. There are several comfortable chairs and a large metal ashtray. Presently, one resident uses the site. My husband smoked there from October 2008 until January 2011.

Both Dr. Daly and Gavin Wilson, a spokesperson for VCH, emphasize flexibility and the need to treat seniors with respect and compassion.

Whether we like it or not we will continue to have two or three people who are addicted to tobacco in our senior population. They need care, and locking the gate to exclude them is not the answer.
