Don't (pay) raise a stink

EDITOR,

To the people that think the councillors' pay raise stinks or that they are robbing the town's coffers, I say look elsewhere for your stench. They are doing arguably the most important job in our community and the idea that they may need the money doesn't seem so far-fetched given our local economy. To do the job properly requires somewhere in the neighborhood of 20-30 hours a week and, with the new pay raise, that works out to somewhere around $16/hr, money that most likely will circulate back into our community with these councillors' families. If you don't need the money, be so noble as to announce to the community that you won't take the money and don't. The issue has been voted on, load up a new picture on your dartboard and look onward to more pressing issues - crumbling infrastructure, SODC, Mamquam Blind Channel, the gondola, etc. If, in 2.5 years, you feel that this raise was the deal breaker for your candidate, you have a chance to act. The next time you see a councillor, give them a pat on the back; with a bit of positive encouragement, maybe they will stop flinching like we are attacking them and we can all move forward.
