Enjoy the sights, sounds of spring

Our community is looking forward to the Sea to Sky Singers spring performances at St. John's Anglican Church on Saturday (May 12) at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday (May 13) at 2 p.m.

Our community is looking forward to the Sea to Sky Singers spring performances at St. John's Anglican Church on Saturday (May 12) at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday (May 13) at 2 p.m. Join the chorus of birds, roar with the waves and dance with the raindrops in this interactive and engaging concert. Small ensembles from the choir round out the event. The choir is led by director Veronica McPhee, assistant director Aaron Purdie and accompanist Colleen Koop. Tickets are available at Billie's Flower House, Highland Video and at the door at adults $12, students and seniors $10 and children under five, free.

The Squamish Environmental Society has its monthly bird count on Sunday (May 13) with members meeting at the Howe Sound Inn and Brew Pub at 7 p.m. This is the time of migrating songbirds and among them are five species of warblers the birders will be looking for. The annual "Spring Fling" will be held at St. John's Anglican Church on Saturday (May 12) from 9 a.m. to noon. A good selection of plants and planters, used vases and garden items and books will be on display as well as a table laden with home baked goods. Coffee and donuts will be available. Meg Toom will also be on hand to speak on Bear Aware.

On Thursday (May 17) at 6:30 p.m. the Squamish Public Library and Quest University continues its lecture series when Dr. Brian Burge-Hendrix will speak on "Plato, Law and Education." Plato suggests that an ideal legal system would actually have no need for laws!

The birthday celebrations at Hilltop House this month will be held on Wednesday (May 16) at 2 p.m. and those to be honoured include Linda Czegledi, Cameron Tanner, Bud Zorn, Randy Ferbey, Ellen Elliasen and Will Croxall.

The Squamish Historical Society has its monthly meeting at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park on Thursday (May 10) at 7 p.m. All members are asked to attend as a work party will be busy restoring the Wilkie Building for the Day Out with Thomas days on June 2 and 3, and June 9 and 10, when hundreds of people are expected to be at the park. New members are always welcome to join the Historical Society.

Tomorrow, Friday (May 11), the annual Children's Health Fair will be held at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

It is a well-known fact that mammograms save lives. The B.C. Cancer Agency's Screening Mammography mobile service will be in Squamish from Thursday (May 24) to Thursday (June 7). Women ages 40 to 79 can book an appointment by calling 1-800-663-9203.

The next distribution day for the Squamish Food Bank will be Wednesday (May 16) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Alano Club on Third Avenue.

The Healthy Brain group for Older Adults will meet on Tuesday (May 15) from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Squamish Mental Health office at 38075 Second Ave. For more information, please phone Delores Stewart at (604) 892-6400.

The Squamish Seniors' Society Spring Barbecue will take place Friday (May 25) from 5 to 8 p.m. Tickets at $10 each includes hamburger, salads and dessert. Alcoholic beverages will be available and sold separately. A limited number if tickets are available at the Seniors Centre.

Rhythmic gymnastics has a new session starting May 15 at the Seniors Centre. Dance and Stretch begins May 16 and Pilates for Seniors begins on May 14. The first Lawn Bowling session begins on May 29 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Billiards will be held each Wednesday night beginning on May 16.

An evening of bingo is planned at the Legion Branch #277 on Monday (May 14) with doors open at 5:30 p.m.
