Enjoy the Squamish Days festivities

Many visitors will be in town this weekend for the 52nd Annual Squamish Days Loggers Sports Festival and I am sure we will give them a friendly welcome to our community.

Gone are the days when the Squamish Elementary School grounds was packed with motor homes and trailers as folks mostly from the United states came here for the weekend celebration.

A wonderful gathering of talented musicians will be entertaining from the rooftop at Gelato Carina today (July 31) from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. and there is bound to be many of your favourite performers on the program.

Your chance to cheer on the bed race team of your choice begins at 7 p.m. tonight when the Bed Races get underway on Cleveland Avenue.

Everything about the Children's Sports tomorrow (Aug. 1) starting at 9:30 a.m. is free and a good turnout is expected at Stan Clarke Park in downtown Squamish. There is the bike contests, races for all ages and abilities and hotdogs and drinks. Naturally, the highlight of the morning is the arrival of that loveable character Ronald McDonald who is always a hit with the kids.

Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) is a weight loss support group having just celebrated 60 years as an international group. Chapter B.C. 2413 meets on Wednesday evening in the United Church Annex at 6:15 p.m. for weigh in. Contact Nancy at 604-892-8422.

While downtown tomorrow, check out the Squamish Farmer's Market and Art at the Market presented by VISUALS Squamish Valley Artists.

The Christmas in July raffle, a fundraiser for the Squamish Food Bank will hold the draw for the many great prizes donated by local merchant today (July 31) at 1 p.m. at Save-On-Foods. Proceeds from the raffle go directly to the children and families in Squamish. During the Squamish Days Festival Parade on Sunday (Aug. 2) starting at 11 a.m., volunteers from the Food Bank will be along the parade route accepting non-perishable food donations and/or cash. More volunteers are needed on Sunday and if you can help out, please call 604-848-4316.

After attending the Novice and Intermediate Loggers Sports tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. at the Al McIntosh Loggers Sports Grounds plan on taking in the Squamish Days Giant Bingo at the Brennan Park auditorium. There is special prizes for seniors too! Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with bingo beginning at 6:45 p.m.

The Souvenir Booth located in the Fields parking lot will be open today and then will move to the Loggers Sports Grounds for Saturday and Sunday.

Please note the change of location for the Squamish Elks and Lions Breakfast on Sunday (Aug. 2). It will be held in the Chieftain Mall (next to Panago Pizza) from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and the early bird price from 7 to 8:30 a.m. is $5 per person. After that the price is $6 adults and $5 for seniors and children under 12 years.

The Squamish Days Festival Parade begins at 11 a.m. along Cleveland Avenue. If you have visitors, be sure to take them on the Squamish Days World Class Open Loggers Sports Show at 1:30 p.m. at the Al McIntosh Loggers Sports Grounds.

The WOW members are asked to note the new location for the ride on Monday (Aug. 3) at 9 a.m. Please meet at The Advenutre Centre for a ride out to Brackendale. For more information, please call Shirley at 604-898-5715.

Holiday or not, the GrassRoots Jam will take place at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Sunday (Aug. 2) from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Join Carolyn Grass and all the gang for some fun foot-stompin' music.

A Loggers Day Sports Event will be held at the Squamish Aquatic Centre on Sunday (Aug. 2) from 2 to 4 p.m. for fun games etc. On Monday (Aug. 3) the B.C. Day Swim is from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.

The Over the Hill Hikers will meet at The Adventure Centre at 9 a.m. on Tuesday (Aug. 4) for a Goat Ridge hike in North Vancouver. For more information, please call Heather at 604-892-9003.

Enter the Green Raffle and support the work of local non-profit organizations and the creation of the Squamish Green Map. There is $500 in prizes to be won and tickets are available at The Hotspot, Howe Sound Brew Pub, Onatah Coffee, Howe Sound Juice Company and Re-Route Sports. Tickets are $2 each or three for $5 and the draw will be held at The Hotspot at 38027 Cleveland Avenue at 4 p.m. on Wednesday (Aug. 5).

The Hearts in Motion Walking Club will meet at 37988 Magnolia Crescent, Valleycliffe on Friday, Aug. 7 at 10 a.m. for a walk on the dyke. This will be followed by our annual barbecue and social. For more information, call Darleen at 604-892-2092 or myself at 604-815-0152.
