'Foodie Forum' on next week's menu

Another Foodie Forum, "Connecting Local Food Initiatives to Increase Real Food Accessibility," is taking place on Tuesday (Jan. 24) from 10 a.m. to noon at the Squamish Public Library. The Foodie Forum is for updating, connecting and educating Squamish residents about local and regional food initiatives.

Brackendale residents are reminded that the Brackendale Owners' and Tenants' Association's annual general meeting will be held at the Easter Seal camp on Thursday (Jan. 26) at 7 p.m. There is much to be discussed and your attendance is requested. Also, Lesley Keith will give an interesting presentation on the history of Brackendale.

The Caregivers Support Group is offered to people caring for an aging relative or loved one who has such an illness and who may be at home or living in a facility. A Family Games Night and Open Mic is planned at the Squamish Public Library on Friday (Jan. 27) from 5 to 8 p.m. Attend and help celebrate Family Literacy Day. The evening includes tournaments, board games to play and also a chance to get up and perform. Pizza will be served at this free event. Registration is required by stopping by the library or calling (604) 892-3110.

The District of Squamish and the Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) are presenting an educational afternoon entitled "Everything You Should Know About Diabetes and Heart Disease" on Wednesday, Feb. 1, at the Seniors Centre at 2 p.m. The VCH presenters are: Heidi Dygas, BScPt, community physiotherapist; Leona Murray, community care pharmacist; Tina Plumb, RN, chronic disease coordinator; Suellen Purdie, case manager, diabetes RN and Val Stainton, dietician, Squamish General Hospital. During the soup and sandwich day at the Seniors Centre on Thursday (Jan. 26) at noon, Nancy from the Squamish Public Library will have a new sampling of the fine resources at our local library. Tickets for the luncheon are $9 for members and $10.50 for non-members, and if you purchase them in advance, you have a chance to win a special draw prize. The afternoon movie at the centre on Friday (Jan. 27) at 1 p.m. will be the Black Swan starring Oscar-winner Natalie Portman. On Monday (Jan. 30), a free journaling class sampler will be held at 10 a.m. and on Tuesday (Jan. 31) a free memoir writing class sampler will be held at 6 p.m.

The Celtic Tenors have established themselves as the most successful classical crossover artists to emerge from Ireland. They will be in concert at the Kay Meek Centre in West Vancouver on Wednesday (March 28) at 8 p.m. Please call Elaine at (604) 898-5463 by Feb. 15 to reserve a seat on the bus.

The Women's Auxiliary to the Squamish General Hospital give a big thank you to the community for their continued support of the Gift Shop at the hospital and to their other endeavours in fundraising for the hospital and the Hilltop House.

The Adult Evening Book Club will meet at the Squamish Public Library on Thursday (Jan. 26) from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. to discuss the book Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese.
