Generous ladies get coddled for cash

Women craving a scandalous night of pampering don't have to wait for the next bachelorette party to let their hair down. Coming off a one year hiatus, the popular ladies-only fundraiser Men of Sea to Sky is back. The Rotarian event raises funds for 10 local non-profit groups who walk away with as much money as they can woo out of their guests. Proof of a good cause is just the beginning. As the evening kicks off, women are given 10 tickets worth a few dollars a piece to hand out to each non-profit group that wins them over. The men manning the booths are encouraged to go the extra mile."Women get chocolates. They get flowers. They get stained glass pieces, little souvenirs, whatever," said event organizer Judy McQuinn. "[The groups] get quite inventive because they've got to do something that's great for everybody but doesn't cost them a lot."As women peruse the booths, there are even more men waiting on them hand and foot."The male Rotary members, they come in and they are all dressed to the nines and they serve us our drinks and our food," she said. After the mix and mingle, women head into the Eagle Eye Theatre for the entertainment portion of the evening. Here, men from each of the non-profit groups get on stage to give a five-minute performance. McQuinn said the performances are "quite secret" but could not rule out the possibility of a male stripper."There's some very talented people," she laughed. "Some very witty things that happen."The performers are judged by a panel of five women, who embrace bribes when choosing a winner. The top three all win a cash prize to pass along to the group they represent. In the past, the Squamish Breakfast Club and Cedar Valley School have fared well, said McQuinn. But with a legion of men waiting to spoil them, it may well be the women who fare the best."The ladies are pampered, there's no question about it," said McQuinn.Men of Sea to Sky takes place at the Eagle Eye Theatre at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $100 and are available at Greg Gardner Motors, Health Food Heaven and from any Rotary member.
