Get fit to kick off 2014

The 28th annual Brackendale Winter Eagle Festival begins with the Eagle Count on Sunday (Jan. 5) with official counters gathering at the Brackendale Art Gallery at 8 a.m. The public is welcome throughout the day as the count is recorded.

In the evening the monthly Acoustic Jam begins at 7:30 to 10 p.m. and this event is a fine way to start a New Year.

Anyone who has saved their cancelled stamps can have them go to the Canadian Baden-Powell Guild. The money helps scouting around the world. Please contact Barbara at (604) 892-9384 to have stamps picked up.

Registrations are now being taken for a variety of fitness classes at the Squamish Seniors Centre and include sit and stand moderate, sit and stand mild, cardio fit and chair fit. All classes start the week beginning Monday (Jan. 6). There is drop-in carpet bowling at noon tomorrow (Friday, Jan. 3).

The first Winter Market for 2014 is this Sunday (Jan. 5) from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the CN Roundhouse and Conference Centre at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park. If you wish to participate or want more information, please go to squamishfarmersmarket.com.

The Hilltop House Support Society meets on Thursday (Jan. 9) at 9:30 a.m. and interested community members are welcome to attend.

For its next series with Quest University, the Squamish Public Library will welcome Dr. Doug Munroe to the library at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday (Jan. 9). His topic will be "Positive News from World Politics" - finally, a talk about international affairs that will leave you feeling upbeat.

If you have visitors here and decide to check out the eagles in our area, remember that volunteers from the Eagle Watch Interpreter Program are at the Brackendale Eagle Run viewing shelter each Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. until the end of January.

Kayla Matzen, who directed The Heart of Christmas Cantata in December, invites everyone to the Squamish Academy of Music (SAM) on Second Avenue on Saturday (Jan. 4) at 3:30 p.m. when she performs classic to contemporary opera favourites. She will be accompanied by Erik Musseau. Admission is by donation and all proceeds will go to the Access Music Education Fund.

Nancy Warwick from the Squamish Public Library will be at the Shannon Falls Retirement Residence on Third Avenue on Thursday (Jan. 9) at 2:30 p.m. with an interesting display of old and new books.

The first bingo night for 2014 will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 on Monday (Jan. 6) with doors open at 5:30 p.m.

Talented artist Toby Jaxon is offering three classes entitled "Exploring Mixed Media." The first class will be held on Thursday (Jan. 9) from 6:15 to 8:45 p.m. Please register at the centre or call (604) 848-6898. A fall prevention workshop will be held at the centre on Tuesday (Jan. 14) at 1 p.m. and although this class is free, please re-register.

The Over the Hill Hikers will meet on Tuesday (Jan. 7) at 9 a.m. at the climbers' parking lot for a Smoke Bluffs/Summer Eve hike. For more information, call Heather at (604) 892-9003.
