Along with everyone else, I want to take the opportunity to say "Go Canada" as the Vancouver-Whistler Olympic Games begin today with the opening ceremonies at B.C. Place Stadium.

It was an emotional and proud moment for the thousands gathered at Brennan Park on Feb. 4 when the last Olympic torchbearer, Kristen McBride made her way onto the stage and lit the cauldron. The whole evening was so entertaining and well planned.

The Squamish Spirit Centre (Brennan Park Recreation Centre) has events planned each day until Feb. 28. Plan on taking your friends and family to the Elks Pancake breakfast tomorrow morning (Feb. 13) from 9 to 11:30 a.m. The Family Fun Zone is ongoing from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Be sure to take in the Winter Farmers' Market from 11 to 4 p.m. Storytime by Trudie from the Squamish Public Library invites youngsters from 10:30 to 11 a.m.

VISUALS, The Squamish Valley Artists Society, has two exciting events showcasing artists in our community. The Squamish Spirit at the Foyer Gallery in the Squamish Public Library is open to the public until March 8 each day Monday to Thursday from noon until 8 p.m. and Friday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Wild at Art's Spirit of Squamish Festival at the UpStares Gallery is located at 37991 Cleveland Avenue is open each day from noon to 8 p.m. but closed Mondays. Be sure to vote for your favourite work of art and be entered to win a painting by Mary Henderson.

The Healthy Brain Program is for seniors 50 years and up and is held at the Seniors Centre at 1201 Village Green Way each month. The next session will be held on Tuesday (Feb. 16) from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Anyone interested in learning more about their brain, how it functions and now to be pro-active in preventing brain damage. Over the Hill Hikers are asked to meet at Carpenter's bridge at 10 a.m. on Tuesday (Feb. 16) for a hike along the trails above Quest University. For more information please call Heather at 604-892-9003.

The Squamish Environmental Society will hold its monthly bird count on Sunday (Feb. 14) with members asked to meet at the Howe Sound Inn and Brewing Company at 8 am. The group will be looking for early spring migrants including robins and red winged black birds. If you wish more information, please call Judith at 604-892-3340.

It's Pancake Tuesday at St. John's Anglican Church (behind London Drugs) on Tuesday (Feb. 16) starting at 5:30 p.m. Everyone is invited and the cost is by donation with a $5 minimum. This delicious meal includes sausages and coffee and tea.

Residents at Hilltop House will honour Hugh MacPherson, Connie Lloyd, Mare Griffin, Don Fisher and Viola Parvin at the monthly birthday party on Wednesday (Feb. 17) at 2 p.m.

The Squamish Food Bank will open its doors at the Alano Club on Third Avenue on Wednesday (Feb. 17) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Caregivers Support Group will now be meeting twice a month at the Squamish Seniors Centre and the next meeting is Wednesday (Feb. 17) from 3 to 4:45 p.m. This group is offered to people caring for an aging relative or loved one who may have dementia, Alzheimer's, stroke or Parkinson's disease and may require a lot of care. Tantalus Walking Club members are asked to meet at Canadian Tire for a Mamquam Trail walk towards the Golf course on Thursday (Feb. 18) at 10 a.m. For more information, please call Joyce at 604-898-5594.

The Squamish Trails Society meeting scheduled for Thursday (Feb. 18) has been cancelled this month.

The monthly soup and sandwich day at the Seniors Centre will be held on Thursday, Feb. 25 at noon. Please purchase tickets ($7 each) in advance. Volunteers interested in helping out are asked to call Pria at 604-848-6898.

Genealogy classes are starting at the Senior Centre on Feb. 15 at 1 p.m. Introduction to billiards for members of the Centre will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 5 p.m. Drop in Knitting is each Thursday at 1 p.m. and why not try folk dancing on Wednesdays at 1 p.m.

On Valentine's Day (Feb. 14) at 8 p.m., the Paperboys from Vancouver will be entertaining at the Brackendale Art Gallery starting at 8 p.m. Tickets at $20 each are available at the Gallery and The Bookshelf.

The monthly meeting of the Squamish Gardeners will be held at the Squamish Public Library at 6:45 p.m. on Monday (Feb. 15). Bev Hill and Chris Dale will present Wild Flowers of the Squamish Estuary. Non-members are welcome to attend for a fee of $5.
