Great weekend in store for music lovers

The second annual Dancing Bear Music Festival at the Quest University on Sunday (April 25) from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. promises to have music and entertainment to please all ages including folk, gospel, rock and jazz.

A lively weekend is promised on Friday, April 30 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, May 1 at 8 p.m. for the 8th annual Brackendale Bluegrass Festival at the Brackendale Art Gallery. For both concerts, tickets are $35 or for one of the evenings, $20 and are available at the Gallery and at The Bookshelf.

A fun evening is planned for the fourth annual Howe Sound Women's Centre's annual Fundraiser and Silent Auction at the Cliffside Pub in Valleycliffe on Saturday, May 1 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. There are some fabulous items to be had at the silent auction and Burger and Beer tickets are $10 each. Jeffery James and the Bootleggers, Karaoke with Hellyeah is sure to provide fine entertainment. Remember there is a 50/50 draw as well as some nifty door prizes. Cedar Valley Waldorf School's Grade 5-6 class will be hosting a massive garage sale on Saturday (April 24) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 38265 Westway Ave. In early May the class will travel to Duncan to participate in the Waldorf Olympics, and this garage sale is their major fundraiser, in addition to a bottle drive and sandwich wrap sale. Feel free to drop off garage sale donations today (Friday, April 23) and any refundable bottles before the end of the month.

The Squamish Firefighters Association is holding a charity car wash Sunday (April 25) at the Garibaldi Village Shopping Centre parking lot between the hours of noon to 4 pm. All proceeds are being donated to assist the Squamish Hospice Society.

Parents are reminded the annual kindergarten reception is being held at the Squamish Public Library tonight (April 23) starting at 6:30 p.m.

It is Pitch-In Canada Week in Squamish and tomorrow and Sunday (April 24 and 25) residents can dispose at the landfill site non-hazardous residential waste. Please note, the free dumping is for Squamish residents only and proof of residency is required.

It is a couple of weeks away, but the Sea to Sky Singers are busy preparing for their spring concert entitled "Deep Longing". On Friday, May 7, the choir will be at the B.C. Museum of Mining at Britannia Beach at 7:30 p.m. and an afternoon concert is planned at St. John's Anglican Church at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 8. Tickets are available at Billie's Bouquet, Highlands Video and at the door at $12 for adults and $10 for seniors and students.

Food Skills for Families on a Smart Budget is sponsored by the Howe Sound Women's Centre Society at 38021 Third Avenue, Squamish Six sessions (three hours each) will begin on Wednesday (April 28) and each Wednesday to June 2 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Learn how to cook simple meals while learning healthy cooking/eating skills that can also assist in meeting your budget. The Over the Hill Hikers are asked to meet at the corner of Ross and Government Roads on Tuesday (April 27) at 9 a.m. for an Ancient Cedars hike in Whistler. If you wish more information, please call Heather at 604-892-9003.

A reminder that St. John's Anglican Church's environment committee is hosting an evening at the church on Thursday (April 29) at 7 p.m. entitled Why Should People of Faith care about the Environment?

WOW, which is a senior ladies cycling group comprised of women 55 to 80 years of age, is getting ready to start its summer riding series. The start to the season will be a coffee/tea together at the Adventure Centre on Monday (April 26) at 11 a.m. If you are new to town, recently retired or just interested in riding and would like to ride with this group, please join them at the Adventure Centre. The average in town ride is about 20K but often, they have trips to other areas which are longer. Rides include a stop somewhere for coffee and chat, so take some money along. For most local rides, the meeting place is Canadian Tire, and the manager of the store has, once again, given permission to leave cars at the bottom end of the parking lot. Easy Riders is a biking group for senior ladies who do not want to ride as far or as fast as WOW. Initial rides will be about 10K but distances will increase as the season progresses and riders gain stamina. If you are not sure about how to use your gears in order to save energy, this is the group for you. Easy Riders are invited to join the coffee morning at the Adventure Centre on Monday (April 26) at 11 a.m. Easy Riders must wear a helmet, take money along for coffee and sign a waiver. The Tantalus Seniors Walking Club members will meet at the Adventure Centre on Thursday (April 29) at 10 a.m. for a walk up Logger's Creek Trail. For more information please phone Joyce at 604-898-5594.

A popular event each month at the Seniors' Centre is the soup and sandwich day and it is on Thursday (April 29) at noon. Tickets are available at the Centre at $7 for members and $8 for non-members. It should be noted that there are now 335 Senior Centre members.

The cutoff date for the seniors; bus trip to Granville Island on Wednesday (April 28) is tomorrow (April 24). Also, if interested in going to the Stars on Ice show at GM Place on May 15 please call Elaine at 604-898-5463 by May 1.

The 5th annual Flea Market and Pancake Breakfast sponsored by the Squamish Lions Club will be held at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park on Saturday, May 8 from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Table rentals at $10 each are available by calling 604-892-8279.

The Evening Book Club at the Squamish Public Library will meet on Thursday (April 29) at 7 p.m. to discuss the book Oryx & Crake by Margaret Atwood. If you have read this book, you are invited to attend.
