Gym an 'exorbitant pipe dream'

Editor's note: This is a letter that was sent to Squamish mayor and council. It was copied to The Chief for publication. After reading the figures for the proposed fitness centre I am doubly flabbergasted.

After reading the figures for the proposed fitness centre I am doubly flabbergasted. Firstly, that a new employee of the municipality has the audacity to think that taxpayers will sit there and swallow yet another money pit operation. And secondly that the mayor and council can actually believe that the facility could bring in $485,000 per year in fees. What planet is everybody living on, "money grows on trees"? We have more than enough commercial fitness centres in Squamish already. Another one at public expense is lunacy.

In these tough economic times with ever-increasing tax burdens, we need council to show some leadership in restraint and common sense. Please do the right thing fiscally for Squamish and kill this exorbitant pipe dream.
