Help fight cancer, gender violence this weekend

There are many worthy fundraising projects in our community this weekend starting with the annual Relay for Life. The location is the Don Ross Secondary School in Brackendale ongoing from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 21).

This is your chance to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost and fight back against all cancers. This family event includes a family obstacle course, music, face painting and food. Howe Sound Women's Centre (HSWC) is sponsoring the annual Walk A Mile in Her Shows and many men have stepped up to the plate and will don their bright red high heels and walk a symbolic mile to help fight domestic violence in our community. The walk starts at the HSWC on Third Avenue on Saturday (Sept. 21) at 11 a.m. Your pledges will be appreciated by the participants and the women's centre.

Hunger is also a problem for many folks and the Squamish Food Bank is holding its B.C. Thanksgiving Food Drive on Saturday (Sept. 21). Please put non-perishable food items in bags and leave them outside your door on Saturday. Your generosity would be much appreciated and cheques can be mailed to the Squamish Food Bank, P.O. Box 207, Garibaldi Highlands, B.C. V0N 1T0.

On Saturday (Sept. 21) at 2:30 p.m. the Doctors Vs. Nurses take to the field in a fun baseball fundraiser at Brennan Park. The day includes a barbecue, beer garden, bouncy castle, raffle and more. Help support Squamish Hospice Society in their dream of having end-of-life care beds in Squamish to support the Sea to Sky Community.

On both Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 21 and 22) the annual Squamish Art Crawl, gallery and studio tours take place. Pick up a map and choose your locations including Garibaldi Highlands and Estates, Brackendale, uptown Squamish and downtown Squamish.

This evening (Thursday, Sept. 19) at 6:30 p.m. the Squamish Library and Quest University lecture series continues at the library with guest Richard Hoshino speaking on Two Problem-Solving Strategies for Mathematics and for Life.

The theme luncheon at the Seniors Centre on Thursday (Sept. 26) at 11:45 a.m. will have on its menu roasted loin of pork, mashed potatoes, peas and carrots, and broken glass cake. Tickets are $9 for members and $10 for non-members, and must be purchased by Sept. 25. Nancy Warwick from the Squamish Library will have a number of books on display as well. Yoga begins at the centre on Sept. 24 and, on Sept. 26 Spanish classes begin and the first session for boot camp is Sept. 27.

The Courage to Grieve Bereavement Support Group for those grieving the loss of a loved one will be held each Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. from Oct. 2 to Nov. 6. It is sponsored by the Squamish Hospice Society and will be held at the hospice office, 38140 Behrner Dr. To register, please call (604) 567-2009 or email [email protected]. There is no charge to participate.

Taoist Tai Chi for beginners is held in St. John's Anglican Church on Mondays from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
