Hire me, SODC

Editor,

It has come to my attention that the most recent CEO hired by our Squamish Oceanfront Development Corporation has resigned. Obviously, he lacked vision and passion, or he would have had the commitment to follow through.

It seems that the penchant for hiring high-priced suits from away is not working out too well. Perhaps it is time to shift gears and get someone locally who has been around long enough to have a sense of history and local spirit.

There is someone available who is passionately interested in Squamish achieving its much vaunted, but so far wasted potential.

Someone who has been considering the development of the Oceanfront lands since they were acquired by the community 10 years ago. Someone who has been thinking of the problem in the context of the whole community, instead of the balkanizing approach adopted by the local planning process. Someone who believes that a more European model would be appropriate.

Someone who sees this as a community project in much the same way as a medieval town would decide to build a cathedral, an opportunity to use the local resources to build a lasting monument to community co-operation which would attract visitors and provide education and employment for young builders, and housing for all segments of society.

Someone who thinks out of the box, and has already formulated an approach which could potentially create somewhere between $50 and $100 million of wealth out of untapped resources.

Someone who has already created a successful mixed-use development on the waterfront which is, in essence, a working model of the type of development you, the people of Squamish, have indicated you want for the Oceanfront Lands.

That someone would be me.

I applied for the position after the first Armani-clad CEO quit, and had I been hired, there would now have been people employed on site, the community would have a pretty good idea of the direction of development, and we wouldn't be millions in debt.

This, then, is my official re-application for the position of CEO of the Squamish Oceanfront Development Corporation. I am ready to hit the ground running, and I certainly don't need $1,700 per day.
