Holiday events ramping up

I'm sure most of us have great memories of those who have gone before us whom we remember fondly with great pride today.

The Women's Auxiliary to the Squamish General Hospital will hold its annual Christmas Bazaar and raffle on Saturday (Nov. 12) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Squamish United Church on Fourth Avenue. There will be a good selection of home baking, crafts, sewing and knitting. Coffee/tea and goodies will also be available. The prizes in the Christmas raffle are cash amounts of $350, $250 and $125 and the draw will be held at 1 p.m.

The Squamish Renaissance on Third Avenue is celebrating its second anniversary with an Open House on Thursday (Nov. 17) from 2 to 4 p.m. Come and enjoy coffee and tea time with residents and if you wish, take a tour of the facility.

On Sunday (Nov. 13) the Squamish Environmental Society will meet at the Howe Sound Inn and Brew Pub at 7 a.m. for the monthly bird count. At this time of year, the group will be looking for bald eagles returning to the valley. For more information, please call Judith at (604) 892-3340.

Drop by the Brackendale Art Gallery on Saturday (Nov. 12) at 8 p.m. when the Squamish Historical Society will welcome guest speaker Don Grant, who will show a film by Hugh Aikens, a mountain photographer. Admission is by donation.

Hilltop birthdays this month will be celebrated on Wednesday (Nov. 16) at 2 p.m. and residents to be honoured include: Doreen Hyland, Jamie Pietila, Joan Gravkin, Joe Capouya, Yolade Genthon, Brenda Karmel, Thelma Whitfield and Diane Topley.

On Sunday, Nov. 20, at 2 p.m. soprano Kelly Coubrough and pianist Laurel Parsons present "As Long As It Isn't Love" in the Quest University multipurpose room. The joint partnership between Howe Sound Performing Arts Association (HSPAA) and Quest University will give Sea to Sky residents an opportunity to hear and see this outstanding professional concert. Tickets are available at Billie's Bouquet, or at the Quest University main office. The admission is $20 for adults and students of all ages can obtain a ticket by making a small donation. The Healthy Brain Group for Older Adults will meet on Tuesday (Nov. 15) at the Squamish Mental Health office at 38075 Second Ave. from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Please contact Delores Stewart if you wish more information.

The Squamish Food Bank will distribute grocery hampers on Wednesday (Nov. 16) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Alano Club on Third Avenue.

The Squamish Public Library and Quest University Canada Lecture series continues on Thursday (Nov. 17) from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Dr. Rob Knop will speak on The Discovery of the Accelerating Universe. In this talk, Dr. Knop will teach you just what it means to say that "Our Universe is accelerating."

The Seniors Centre Christmas art show and craft sale is planned for Thursday (Nov. 24) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and tables are still available. That is also soup and sandwich day starting at noon and those who purchase tickets in advance will have a chance at a special draw.

The Squamish Trails Society will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday (Nov. 17) at 7 p.m. in the Squamish Arts Council building on Cleveland Avenue. For more information, please call Heather Evans at (604) 898-3872.

The Community Christmas Care (CCC) committee is meeting regularly to plan for the food hampers that will need to be delivered to many in our community in December. Next week, supermarkets and other businesses will have specially marked boxes for donations of non-perishable food items. Cash or cheques can be mailed to CCC, Box 516, Squamish, B.C. V8B 0A4 or dropped off at the Squamish Credit Union in the Chieftain Mall. Application forms for those requesting a hamper are available at local churches, Howe Sound Women's Centre, Pearl's and Sea to Sky Community Services.

Seniors interested in a bus trip to Park Royal, Capilano Mall and Lonsdale Quay on Wednesday, Nov. 23, are asked to call Elaine by Friday (Nov. 18) at (604) 898-5463. Also, a trip to the casino at Hastings Park on the PNE grounds is planned for Wednesday, Nov. 30, and the cut-off date is Friday, Nov. 25.

Advance polling dates for the Nov. 19 municipal election are being held in the Senior Centre on Saturday (Nov. 12) from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday (Nov. 16) from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Squamish Public Library.

Tickets for the upcoming production of A Christmas Carol by the Between Shifts Theatre on Nov. 24 to 27 and Dec. 1 to 4 at the Brackendale Art Gallery are available at the Portico Gallery, Billie's Bouquet, the Adventure Centre and the BAG at $20 for adults, and $15 for students and seniors.

Former resident Ann Forry is now a casting director for TV commercials, TV movies and feature films. She has cast commercials for Nike, Barbie, A&W, Disney, Mountain Dew, Mattel and more. Ann has an eye for discovering new talent and starting careers including that of Erin Karpluk, star of Being Erica on CBC TV. She will be holding a casting call for children ages seven to 14 years on Saturday (Nov. 19) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and for those 15 years and up on Sunday, Nov. 20, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The location is the Sandman Hotel at 39400 Discovery Way. Tickets for the annual Senior Citizens Christmas Banquet set for Friday, Dec. 2, are on sale at the Seniors Centre on Tuesday at $15 per person. The tickets go very quickly so if you haven't picked up yours as of yet, do it soon!

The St. Joseph's Christmas Bazaar is set for Saturday, Nov. 26, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 2449 The Boulevard. In addition to the popular luncheon and tea, the event will feature home baking, crafts, raffles and much more. Come and join the fun.

The Over the Hill Hikers will meet at Ross and Government roads at 9 a.m. on Tuesday (Nov. 15) for a hike around the Lost Lake Loop in Whistler. For more information, call Heather at (604) 892-9003.
