House league supported

EDITOR,
I am writing in regard to the article about Squamish Youth Soccer’s proposed termination of U13 to U18 house soccer (“Teen ‘house league’ soccer’s future in doubt,” Chief, May 1). I have been a resident of Squamish for 17 years and have had the good fortune to raise four children in this fantastic town. All of my children played soccer, two on Rep teams and two in the House League. Soccer was a valuable part of their childhood and I am very grateful that through the hard work of so many volunteers, my children were enabled to experience this great sport.

I do not feel the value of House Soccer can be underestimated. Not everyone is strongly competitive and the love and need for exercise does not always come with great physical prowess. Sport is nonetheless something we as a society should encourage and enable for all. To think that soccer would be over for someone who wanted to play but didn’t make the Rep team is truly sad.

Teenage years are critical years, where negative distractions can create problems. Giving teenagers and outlet for some enjoyable exercise and camaraderie can only be a positive thing.
