The Vancouver Aquarium is coming to Sea to Sky schools with displays.

 

An interesting evening is planned at the Squamish Public Library tonight (Thursday, May 15) from 6 to 8 p.m. 

Guest Pat Robinson will share her love of journaling and how it can become a form of self-discovery and help in the healing process. This evening is co-sponsored by the Howe Sound Women’s Centre and if you wish to attend, please call the centre at (604) 892-5748.

Balding for Dollars in support of children with cancer and blood disorders at B.C. Children’s Hospital will take place on Saturday, May 24, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Squamish Junction Park at 37950 Cleveland Ave., sponsored by Team Chawanda of the Squamish Dragon Boat Association.

Hilltop House will celebrate birthdays this month on Wednesday (May 21) at 2 p.m. when Bruno Marini, Mae Pascal, Cameron Tanner, Roy Wathen, Ellen Elliasen and Mae Smith will be honoured.

Also on May 21, the Squamish Food Bank will open its doors for grocery distribution from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Alano Club on Third Avenue. Cash (cheques) donations can be mailed to the Food Bank at P.O. Box 207, Garibaldi Highlands, B.C. V0N 1T0.

Are you ready to see an American tribal love rock musical? 

Then you will want to see the Howe Sound Secondary School’s musical rendition of Hair. The location is the Eagle Eye Theatre and performances are Thursday to Sunday, May 22 to 24, and the following week from May 28 to 31. Please note, some material may not be appropriate for younger audiences and is recommended for 14 years plus. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the performance at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the school office and Billie’s Flower House at $12 adults and $10 for students and seniors.

The Spring Mother’s Day raffle sponsored by the Women’s Auxiliary to Squamish General Hospital was held on May 9 and the lucky winners were: Carolyn Eaton (visiting from Ontario) $250, Patricia Marini ($175) and Lynda Alexander ($100). The WA thanks everyone for their support and the proceeds of the raffle will go towards purchasing more equipment for the hospital.

The Squamish Environment Society is pleased to have the Vancouver Aquarium’s Cetacean Research Program give a presentation at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Wednesday (May 21) at 7 p.m. on “What’s in Our Waters: Cetaceans and Sea Turtles of British Columbia.” 

Discover the whales, dolphins, porpoises and sea turtles that inhabit B.C. waters during a presentation by Tessa Danelsesko of the B.C. Cetacean Sightings Network. 

Find out which species are the most commonly seen around Howe Sound.

Attention all teens who would like to attend a Tie-Dye Party: It is happening at the Squamish Public Library on Wednesday (May 21) from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and to participate you need a white T-shirt, pair of shorts or a bikini to turn into a kaleidoscope of colours. Snacks will be served at this free event.

The Squamish Gardeners will meet on Monday (May 19) at 6:45 p.m. in the Sandman Inn. 

Scott Henderson, known as “The Mushroom Man,” will be the guest speaker. Prior to the meeting there will be a plant exchange. Non-members are invited to attend for a $5 fee.

Emma Jarrett is running a field hockey program for ladies aged 16 and older on Tuesdays from 8 to 9:30 p.m. through June 24 on the Brennan Park all-weather turf field. 

No field hockey experience is necessary for the sessions. All you need are shin pads and a good set of runners, turf shoes or cleats; sticks and other equipment will be supplied. Drop-in cards are available for $35 for five sessions.

The theme luncheon at the Squamish Seniors Centre on Thursday (May 29) will be a barbecue offering with hamburgers, potato salad and dessert. Tickets are now on sale at $9 for members and $10 for non-members. 

Mike Sherlock will have classes in watercolour and acrylic painting at the centre at 9:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday (May 20).
